The Generaton Gap; Film and Digital

I remember when I was a kid, my parents had a film camera. I wasn’t allowed to even get my hands on it (trying to have what I can’t have was the very reason that sparked my interest in photography).

Back then, film was, for a lack of a better word, a scarce commodity. Pressing the shutter button will take you to a point of no return where the image will be permanently “engraved” with no option of do-overs. Read more »

Of all the living species that roam the earth, man is the most peculiar and complex of all. Man is interesting and unpredictable. Imagine that thought being multiplied 6 billion times; the world population. How man interacts with each other varies from person to person but in the end, a vague pattern emerges. Read more »

Review; A4Tech MK-510 Headphones

Yesterday, I went to the mall to look for a new pair of headphones to replace my old pair that served me well for almost 4 months, and I got this yesterday for my iPod Classic for just around $10. I must say, the included pouch and extra cushions is a nice touch and something that I have yet to see from other manufacturers. Audio-wise, it has superb high and low end response, but it falls short on the mid range which isn’t a problem that can’t be fixed with a quick tweak on EQ. I found mine to sound incredible with the R&B preset since it exaggerates the mids thereby compensating for the loss of it. Overall it is a great product and I have no regrets purchasing it. Worth every buck!

Who says only Windows can have all the fun?

Mac OS X is known for its ergonomics, out of the box features, and its intuitive user interface. Sounds almost perfect for most people, but it isn’t all fun and games (literally). A lot of game developers prefer to compile their games for DirectX, Microsoft’s proprietary graphics API. Obviously, this means Mac OS X, which uses OpenGL is not supported. Not a big problem for regular users, but it’s definitely a deal breaker for casual and hardcore gamers alike.

Put a “sock” in it

They never seem to get tired of it. A few days ago, some bishops of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), the official organization of the church in the country, expressed outrage at the new Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Esperanza Cabral and agitated to have her sacked when she promoted the use of contraceptives in preventing AIDS last Valentine’s Day. The bishops stressed that “It is immoral for a government official to support contraceptives such as condoms to prevent sexually transmitted diseases”, and that the distribution of condoms only promotes sexual promiscuity among the public, especially the youth.

The dB Arms Race

The so-called “Loudness War” is a persisting issue in the Recording Industry since the late 1980’s when Compact Discs (CDs) were first introduced. It involves the practice of digitally mastering albums with high levels of loudness and a significant reduction in dynamic range. Which means, there is less difference between the loud peaks and the quiet sections producing a sound that is uniformly loud from the beginning to the end. I’d rather not get too technical with it as I don’t want to bore you guys to death. I’d like to share a video on it just to show you the basics behind it instead.

Cut the Irony!!!!

As some of you who have been following me on twitter or are friends with me on Facebook may know, my Internet went down last Wednesday when my modem’s power adapter died. Fortunately, I have my 3G modem with me, but it charges me by the hour and it isn’t exactly what you would call ‘cheap’.

I called up Smart, my ISP and I was scheduled to get a visit from the tech at 2pm on Friday.  Surprisingly, they did come albeit being an hour late. Finally I get to have my Internet back! Not quite. They came over to my house to replace the power adapter but the thing is, they didn’t bring the goddamn part! Seriously, how the hell can you possibly forget to bring something when it’s the ONLY reason as to why you’re coming over to my house in the first place? IDIOTS!

Moving on, they took the busted adapter with them and scheduled for a second visit at 9am the next day to finally replace it with a new one. So I reluctantly gave them some consideration and agreed for a second visit. I said to myself; “After this rather embarrassing situation, I think they’d do everything to set things right. Right?” Wrong. They never came and I had to call up Smart (Which by now I strongly believe is getting a bit tad ironic) only to realize they had it scheduled to January 18th without me knowing it. To make the long story short, I still don’t have my Internet back as I’m writing this little rant of mine and I’m also starting to get broke by being on 3G.

Fortunately, it turns out that my contract will end on February 3rd when I asked the guy on the line. Now, I’m not going to have any second thoughts of terminating my subscription and switching to another ISP. Thanks for relieving me of that dilemma Smart Bro!

My Top-10 Christmas Wishlist

I’m not really a fan of having a Christmas wish-list (heck I never even wrote to Santa Claus when I was a kid and I hate to break it to you boys and girls, but he ain’t real!!!), but since everyone seems to be doing it, I should join the bandwagon and make one myself.

But I don’t wanna look like a snobbish selfish prick so I believe I should be careful with what I say here.
First of all, I like getting gifts. No doubt about that. And as much as I would like to give back, I don’t have the money nor the resources to do so. Neither do I have the talent/skill/inspiration to make artsy/crafty crap that people make in lieu of something with market value.

Every Christmas, I’ve been asked by people what I want. But social protocol dictates that you let the giver choose the gift, while you cross your fingers that he/she will get you something that you will really really like or really really need. Unfortunately it doesn’t always work that way. Read more »

The 4 am traffic light

You know the light I’m talking about. At four in the morning, you’re driving down a flat desolate highway. You can see forever in every direction and are entirely sure that you are completely alone. Out of nowhere, and for no good reason, appears a red light. You stop and wait for it to turn green. It doesn’t. You know it’s completely safe to run the light. There are no cars coming – you can see that with your own eyes. And yet you wait. A tumbleweed blows past you as you ponder the possibility of some sort of police sting operation to catch late-night red-light runners. By now you are cursing yourself for being such a law-abiding fraidy-cat. You tell yourself that the Dukes of Hazzard would run the light (yes, even Daisy). Minutes later, just as you’re about to almost gather up enough guts to start thinking about maybe getting the courage to perhaps go through the red, it turns green. You’ve wasted some time, burned unnecessary gasoline and proven yourself to be a pussy. All because of a little red traffic light. Multiply this frustration by a billion if you have to pee really really badly. The Europeans have a system where at 4 a.m. lights such as these, become flashing reds, to be treated as a stop sign: stop, look, go. No wonder they look more relaxed than us.

Car Alarms

Before you buy yourself a car alarm, take note of this. If your alarm goes off, I’m 800% more likely to smash your windshield or key your door than I am to try to prevent whatever theft may or may not be occurring. Have you ever seen a car alarm interrupt a robbery? I’ve seen police officers walk down the street without turning their heads when an alarm goes off. It’s not an anti-theft device, it’s a mass public infuriator. So weigh the slim odds of an alarm saving your car against the near certainty of me sending a garbage can through your driver-side window, and think long and hard about whether installing a car alarm is the right choice for you.
